I meant to post this on Sunday… Dundalk man Jim Corr’s appeared last weekend on RTÉ’s new Saturday Night Show (hosted by that appalling Cork man Brendan O’Connor). Crap name for a show? Maybe… but at least it’s not “The Brendan O’Connor Show”…

And yes… Jim’s still bonkers… and he’s still going on about the New World Order stuff that he ranted about on the Last Word almost two years ago ahead of the first Lisbon Treaty. He’s still in way out of his depth and still abusing his fame and celebrity to spread this stuff and (repeatedly) promote his activist shite peddling web site.

I mean SURE… he’s entitled to his opinion and he’s certainly entitled to express it if he wants to… (although I believe RTÉ gave him way too much airtime here and any other presenter would have pulled him up on a few points far better than O’Connor could) – but if you’re to believe him, you’d have to believe the following:

Guy falls on his arse, Keyboard Cat plays him off

“D’ya think that was faked by RTÉ to make their ‘Big Freeze’ report more entertaining?” asked a friend and co-worker of mine, after a Dublin pedestrian was shown on the national broadcaster’s Six-One news programme falling on his arse on an icy footpath, walloping his head in the process.

“No, no I don’t,” I said… And I didn’t. (…primarily because he’d walloped his head in the process…) Still though… eh?

Play him off, Keyboard Cat!

This looks interesting… another brain-teasing show from ABC – and it’s nice to see that RTÉ will be airing it here!

FlashForward looks like it’ll be the new LOST, with it’s first season running alongside the last season of the iconic island show and with ex-hobbit and LOST star, Dominic Monaghan now on board to take up a regular cast slot too!

(From Wikipedia-) A mysterious global event causes most people to simultaneously experience, for two minutes and seventeen seconds, his or her life six months in the future. When it is over, many are dead in accidents involving vehicles, aircraft, and any other device needing human control. Everyone who survived is left wondering if what they saw will actually happen.

Changes in RTÉ

rte-logoGetting to this late… as Jim Carroll of the Irish Times says, “it’s a busy afternoon in Montrose”…

  • Ryan Tubridy has revealed some plans for the Late Late Show – the owl will return, the set will be different, the new theme tune is “a very exciting mystery” and there will be a “house band”.
  • RTÉ’s new season has been announced, with highlights including the aforementioned all-new Late Late, “The Frontline” with Pat Kenny, “Podge & Rodge’s Stickit Inn” – a quiz game show, “Does God Hate..?” with *cough* Marian Finucane (wonder will she "do a Louis Theroux" and talk to the WBC :) ), and a whole bunch of movie ‘premieres’. September should be interesting on the tellybox!
  • and… most prominently as far as I’m concerned, John Clarke is stepping down as Head of RTÉ 2fm. I can’t say I’m disappointed by this. I always liked the guy but I feel that 2fm has been somewhat frozen in time recently, while under his control, and needs a shot in the arm – which is possibly best provided in the form of new blood at the top with new ideas.
  • There’s plenty of rumours flying around at the moment (although there’s nothing concrete that I’ve seen) regarding another major programmes/presenters reshuffle for RTÉ Radio – which is supposedly due to happen next week. Watch this space. Jim Carroll is wondering whether Clarke will make the “wholesale, seismic changes the station needs” before leaving or whether he’ll leave that task to his successor. There’s more discussion on Clarke’s departure on radiowaves and boards.ie.

On a personal level, I wish John the best of luck in whatever he decides to do!

Ah sure they didn’t suit him…

Larry GoganLarry Gogan – the legend of Irish radio – now confined to the weekends on RTÉ 2fm – is well known for the “Just-A-Minute Quiz”… a quickfire general knowlege quiz that, as the title suggests, takes just a minute to complete.

Today’s contestant, Ryan Kinealy from Galway, was clearly taking the piss out of Larry – pretending not to know any of the answers, repeatedly asking the veteran broadcaster for the next question, really pushing it at one point by asking “can I go on to Google for a sec?” (with Larry somewhat angrily replying “No, you can’t!”) and even looking for a third option in a “true or false” question.

This made for very uncomfortable (but pretty bloody funny) radio. I think Larry handled it as well as could be expected! Check it out:

Aside… What was the contestant saying at the end there before he got cut off? Sounded like “Cock balls! Cock balls! Cock balls! Ha ha ha ha …” to me… (!)
