Here’s a great song, – a song of the moment, if you will …- and it’s by that great Dublin band, Bell X1 (known for the hits Flame, Rocky Took A Lover, and the beautiful Eve, the Apple of my Eye – among others).
Yes, they sound very much like Talking Heads here, but yes, I LIKE Talking Heads, so since when is that a bad thing?
This song, which is getting great airplay (on Phantom anyway) is the live version of The Great Defector, recorded in Dublin:
It’s another song of the moment – and this time it’s Fight Like Apes! Lend them your face ‘cos they like karate…! Yay!!
Fight Like Apes – Tie Me Up With Jackets:
Happy New Year, music fans!… Next in the series and a recent Mulley fluffy – it’s Springsteen influenced New Jersey rockers, The Gaslight Anthem.
From the August 2008 album of the same name, this is the ass-kickin’ happy song “The ‘59 Sound” – a track that “Mr. Simon” (as he likes to be called when he’s teaching us in college) has been playing with appreciable regularity on Phantom Daily.
Great song – always picks me up nicely when I hear it on the radio. They sound like a great band… looking forward to hearing more from them soon!
A short insight… Generally late at night at the weekends, you’ll find me awake until Stupid O’Clock (read as 4 or 5am). Often this is because I only get home from work some time between 2 and 2.30am and it only feels like – say – 7pm (or whatever “normal” home time from work would be).
I often spend the time in those ‘wee small hours’ either watching a movie or playing a music set in the DJ software on my laptop (listening on my Senn HD-215 headphones turned up nice and loud!)… occasionally accompanied by a good whiskey – just doing whatever it takes to tire myself out or wind down after work.
Tonight I did the latter (played the music set), and the following is an excerpt from the playlist:
Urge Overkill – Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon
Bell X1 – I’ll see your Heart & Raise you Mine
Kings of Leon – Use Somebody
The Blizzards – Trust Me, I’m A Doctor
AC/DC – War Machine
Slade – Radio Wall of Sound
The View – 5Rebbeccas
Ida Maria – Oh My God
Pearl Jam – Even Flow
Keane – Spiralling
Jeff Buckley – Last Goodbye
Bauhaus – Ziggy Stardust
I don’t know what my choice of “what songs follow what songs” says about me, but I do think my musical taste has improved over the years
Going to make a series of these… what songs I’m loving at that moment. What songs can I not get enough of. What songs get me going. What songs capture the moment.
Right now, I’m loving this one… it hasn’t been long, but welcome back, Keane… welcome back! This is “Spiralling”, the lead track from their latest album, “Perfect Symmetry”. Sounds nice and 80’s while still having that modern-alt sound. Good work, fellahs!
