Alternative music devolves

nicklebackSome who know me would know that I have a terribly irrational desire to punch Chad Kroeger, the whiney singer with the girlie “bangs” from Nickelback, in his stupid smarmy self-important half-beardy face.
Okay… I’m not even entirely 100% certain why (although it looks like I’m not alone!), as I don’t actually hate Nickelback or their music (much as I really really want to)… and I’m quite sure I don’t hate Chad Kroeger, and that he’s not stupid – probably isn’t self-important or big headed or whatever… but damn, for some unkown reason, I want to punch him in the face really fucking hard.
Which is probably why this picture made me laugh out loud …

Post Xmas Catch-up

Last couple of days have been kinda mental… apart from Christmas Day when I just chilled out and spent some quality time with the family and no-one else – as it should be. On St. Stephens’ Day, it was fairly busy in work – and we nearly ran out of beer due to a gas compressor problem! (only nearly… it was fixed)

Yesterday I was DJ’ing a pretty big house party in Ardee (a “housecooling”- clearly the opposite to a housewarming – they’re moving out). I started at about 7.45pm and finally wound down at roughly 4.45am (yes… a full 9 hours later!) Everything got played – from hip-hop to dance, punk, country, alternative, metal and even some slow smoochy numbers and a bit of trad. At 5am, someone got a guitar out and the party continued for another 2 hours or so until I went and passed out in a bedroom until 2pm. Now I’ve work at 5pm… Oh joy.

Hope all your Christmasses were all you wanted them to be. Mine was a blast in some ways – but, most importantly – was time well spent – with family and good friends.

A short insight… Generally late at night at the weekends, you’ll find me awake until Stupid O’Clock (read as 4 or 5am). Often this is because I only get home from work some time between 2 and 2.30am and it only feels like – say – 7pm (or whatever “normal” home time from work would be).

I often spend the time in those ‘wee small hours’ either watching a movie or playing a music set in the DJ software on my laptop (listening on my Senn HD-215 headphones turned up nice and loud!)… occasionally accompanied by a good whiskey – just doing whatever it takes to tire myself out or wind down after work.

Tonight I did the latter (played the music set), and the following is an excerpt from the playlist:

Urge Overkill – Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon
Bell X1 – I’ll see your Heart & Raise you Mine
Kings of Leon – Use Somebody
The Blizzards – Trust Me, I’m A Doctor
AC/DC – War Machine
Slade – Radio Wall of Sound
The View – 5Rebbeccas
Ida Maria – Oh My God
Pearl Jam – Even Flow
Keane – Spiralling
Jeff Buckley – Last Goodbye
Bauhaus – Ziggy Stardust

I don’t know what my choice of “what songs follow what songs” says about me, but I do think my musical taste has improved over the years ;)

Song of the moment: Keane – Spiralling

Going to make a series of these… what songs I’m loving at that moment. What songs can I not get enough of. What songs get me going. What songs capture the moment.

Right now, I’m loving this one… it hasn’t been long, but welcome back, Keane… welcome back! This is “Spiralling”, the lead track from their latest album, “Perfect Symmetry”. Sounds nice and 80’s while still having that modern-alt sound. Good work, fellahs!
