4fm is one of Ireland’s newest (and already one of Ireland’s best) radio stations. It has a multi-city license broadcasting to Cork, Dublin, Limerick and Galway cities – and, for some reason, to all of County Clare. Aimed at an older (>35) audience, they play more easy-listening and less pop/chart tracks… plus they have the excellent Peter Dickson (the voice of ‘E4′ in the UK, also known as “Voiceover Man”) providing their idents, and that lovely fellah Brian McColl presenting a very entertaining show Monday to Friday, 2 to 5pm.

Part of Brian’s show – the whole middle part, in fact – is the “Oldies Hour”, where listeners get to email in their list of favourite oldies (anything up to the early/mid-eighties) and the playlist for that whole hour is chosen from their list. I sent Brian a list of 27 songs a few weeks ago, before I went on holidays, and he held out on featuring them until I came back… until today, in fact!

Here’s a clip of the intro to the hour with a little bit of ‘banter’ between Brian and Peter Dickson:

And here’s the list of songs played:

Bob Dylan – Like A Rolling Stone
Toto – Africa
The Rolling Stones – Paint it Black
Marvin Gaye – Sexual Healing
Elvis Presley – Burning Love
The Who – Who Are You (not the ‘radio edit’ – so the word ‘fuck’ got in there… twice!)
Bruce Springsteen – Dancing in the Dark
Queen – Radio Ga Ga
Simon & Garfunkel – The Boxer
Simple Minds – Don’t You Forget About Me
Spandau Ballet – Through The Barricades

Your banter standards are decidedly low.

That clip might not be the best example of ‘banter’, but I was just pointing out that I do like the little Peter Dickson clips (totally disliked his idents, etc. on 4fm at first, but they really grew on me) – especially when the presenter gets to interact with them.
