The Irish popular music singles chart is published weekly on Fridays meaning that the Christmas No. 1 here is the song that was at the top of the chart on the Friday before Christmas (in this case, the day which has just ended – or December 19th).

Here’s that chart (picture, right):

So there we have it … The Christmas No. 1 for 2008 is X-Factor winner, Alexandra Burke with her cover of ‘Hallelujah’ and the Jeff Buckley version just made it to No. 9. Ah well, it was worth a shot!

[EDIT]: The Buckley version looks likely to hit the No. 2 spot in the UK (shoving Leona Lewis’ “Run” to No. 3). As far as I know this would make history as it’d be the first time that two versions of the same song would be at No. 1 and 2 at Christmas. It’d also mean that all the top 3 would be cover versions…
